Outline

Izena Island is a small remote island with a population of around 1,200, accessible by ferry from the northern part of Okinawa’s main island. Known as the birthplace of King Sho En, it is a place where history and spiritual tradition still run deep. The island’s villages preserve Fukugi tree-lined paths and red-tiled rooftops, and rather than flashy tourist attractions, it is the simple way of life—people living in harmony with nature—that takes center stage. With crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, and a dark night sky ideal for stargazing, the island also offers plenty of natural beauty to enjoy in a peaceful setting. And because transportation from the main island is limited, Izena has a special charm: the feeling of having the island all to yourself, and time that flows gently and unhurriedly.
